There are many different types of formal prom dress. Before deciding which is right for you take time to consider which style will be best to suit your shape and the occasion.

An A line dress is a long dress that flares out form the natural waist. It is very flattering for most figures especially pear shapes. It is a classic elegant style that will always be in fashion.
A cocktail dress can sometimes be worn instead of a ball dress or evening gown. These days it is often acceptable to wear a less formal cocktail dress to many formal functions. It is worth checking before hand but a cocktail dress is likely to become a more versatile addition to your wardrobe and so may be a more cost effective option than the more formal styles. A cocktail dress is shorter and than a more formal ball dress or evening gown and can be in almost any style but usually has some sort of embellishment or detail to make it something special.
