WOW this is a major privacy breach.

With any cell phone (smart or otherwise) the telephone networks have been able to track your movements. All you need to do is to keep it turned on. Not much you can do about this, except hope they don't exercise that ability. Turning the device off frequently can help somewhat... they don't know where you've been (or where your device has been) when the device is turned off.

So I'm going to buy an iPad (Wi-Fi only). I'll either turn it off or close the cover (putting it to sleep) when I'm not using it. I would like to see old location data automatically deleted and to have the option of not backing up location data.

Does the MBP have anything similar inside? No reason why it couldn't.

You're right, just went to Intel's site. How 'bout Merom? I thought I
heard (or read) that one of Intel's next generation cpu's would be
pin compatable with the current Yonah's.

EDIT: went to the Merom link in your sig. I hope to see a BIOS/EFI updater so I can upgrade the cpu in my iMac.Merom is socket compatible with Yonah. Some users have already put in the new chips in current machines.

My favorite was a few years ago when Apple tried to stop New York (aka the Big Apple) from using this logo for their "Green New York" environmental project.

Apple claimed it would "seriously injure the reputation which it has established for its goods and services."

And if people are really unwilling to wait a couple weeks, nothing is stopping them from buying the yonah models.

Or if they want the simple satisfaction of having a C2D laptop on order, they can always pre-order one at Dell, HP, etc., then cancel that pre-order when the MBP C2D are announced. That way, in spirit, they can have a mac Core 2 Duo machine on pre-order right now. :)

if apple wants to stay competivie, they need to release updates tomorrow.. not wait for paris but tomorrow. Plus i can order a new iMac this week and still get my free ipod nano :D
I'll note that the Dell notebook isn't shipping until 14 September (6th for the low end), and the desktop version shows a ship date in November. Apple have plenty of time.

i don't know, but i am not sure about this Intel thing yet!

Because I am going to. I'm a completely safe driver (even when doing 90 or above) until I run into some dunderhead who has to enforce the speed limit themselves. Had that woman just moved like everyone else did, I would have never had to cut her off in order to punish her. And yes I did have to punish her, because she needed to be taught her dang place on the road.

EDIT: @adk - yes I am 16, however in this situation my mother was in the car and actually encouraged me to cut the idiot off. So it's not just an age based thing.

Okay fine, you're an ******* and your mother's an ******* too.
Come back and talk to me when you have 5 years under your belt.

Remember one thing Dmac. YOU ARE A CRAPPY DRIVER and will be consider a crappy driver until you have 5 years under your belt. At that point then we can start judging you on how you drive.
The studies may say it, but I see plenty of people with over 5 years of experience that still don't know wtf they're doing.
You deserve a bad rap:rolleyes: There is nothing illegal going 5 under. It is illegal to be going 20 over. If you get caught, that is like an auto revocation of your license to give you an idea how serious it is
Depends. I've been pulled over for 20+ on the highway and gotten warnings (and sometimes a ticket). Now, do 20 over in a school zone, and you won't get off so easy...
The simple fact is that I should not have to obey a 70mph speed limit if I don't want to.
Fine, go over. I do all the time. But remember that you do so at your own risk, and that you need reaction time in case some idiot (i.e. the minivan driver or one such as yourself) doesn't check before changing lanes.

Why would I even bother driving a car that can hit 186mph (with the speed governor removed, with the governor top speed is 155mph) at 70 mph? A Ford Fiesta can hit those speeds, what's the point of fast cars if you're going to follow the speed limit in them?
They're called track days. You get to flog a car with little worry about random pedestrians or people being in the wrong lane. And where the **** do you expect to hit anything even close to 155 on a public highway, especially in an area prone to potholes? US Highways are not designed with 100+ in mind, they are not maintained with 100+ in mind, and they are not enforced with 100+ in mind. Also, read this ( TLDR: Guy drives his Enzo on a public road at almost 200mph (the road was closed for a charity event he was participating in). He hits a bump and goes airborne. Smash crash, now he has several broken bones, bruises, and probably surgery on his thumb. And this is in a car that produces north of 500lb of downforce at those speeds (1700lbs at 221mph). Plus, it's built with a carbon fiber survival cell, which an M5 does not have. Keep that in mind before you try to test the limits of a vehicle on public roads.
I really don't think it is necessary to call me or any member of my family "pathetic." There's nothing wrong with manipulating the system to your advantage, if you do it for a valid purpose (such as teaching a crappy driver a lesson).

It's completely necessary to call you and your family pathetic. Your mother caused a collision, and then lied about it in court. Now she encourages you to do the same. And OF COURSE there is something wrong with manipulating the system to your advantage, no matter the reason. Plus, that you think having a judge for an uncle gives you sway is incredibly unethical, especially if he does indeed help you out, he would be in violation of the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct. Specifically: Canon 2
A Judge Should Avoid Impropriety and the Appearance of Impropriety in All Activities
    A. Public confidence in the judiciary is eroded by irresponsible or improper conduct by judges. A judge must avoid all impropriety and appearance of impropriety. A judge must expect to be the subject of constant public scrutiny. A judge must therefore accept restrictions on conduct that might be viewed as burdensome by the ordinary citizen and should do so freely and willingly.
    B. A judge should respect and observe the law. At all times, the conduct and manner of a judge should promote public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary. Without regard to a person's race, gender, or other protected personal characteristic, a judge should treat every person fairly, with courtesy and respect.
    C. A judge should not allow family, social, or other relationships to influence judicial conduct or judgment. A judge should not use the prestige of office to advance personal business interests or those of others. A judge should not appear as a witness in a court proceeding unless subpoenaed.
Oh, and I have to guess that your uncle is one of these people (,_2010#District_Courts). He's not anonymous, we just don't know which one he is.
You're also the guy that will wreck his car because I force you to, and you're also the guy that I will then sue to pay for my deductible and any applicable medical costs. And I'm the guy that will laugh in your face and say "gonna move for me next time?" as I walk out of court and you cut me a check.
I can guarantee you, that if you tried this **** on me. Not only would we BOTH wreck, but you wouldn't even get the chance to sue me.
Why should I care what people think of me.

It's generally people with this attitude that have it come around to bite them in the ass.

I can only say that I hope, when you wreck, you not only kill yourself, but your mother too.

It also depends if you can run multiple instances of that application. A little help here Multimedia? I know you've used multiple instances of Toast. Care to enlighten us on what other applications we can do the same? Maybe we should make a guide on it...Preemble clarification: I use Toast ( in a highly unorthodox way - nothing to do with writing DVDs or CDs. I use it most of the time to write DVD IMAGES that Handbrake ( understands how to make priistine mp4 files from. I am able to reduce a 4.3GB original EyeTV HD broadcast recording down to 351MB using this method. The result is an excellent, albeit soft, version of the original that can go on an iPod or two on a CD and when played on an analog TV from the iPod looks just like a DVD. On a HD monitor it still looks great. Just a little soft. Sound quality is identical to the original.

I haven't explored what else we can run simultaneously beyond Toast ( and Handbrake ( I can run as many instances of those as I like. But I run out of cores even just running both of them because they will each use more than two cores given the chance to run alone. Running them simultaneously even with a second Handbrake running third, still gets all the jobs done faster than waiting for two to run and then running the third. Handbrake will process up to about 150-160 fps when two copies are running while it will process only about 93-100 fps alone.

Handbrake FPS readings vary a lot between the analysis pass and the writing pass - much slower writing on the second pass than studying-planning the writing scheme on the first pass on both the Quad and the Mac Pro. On the Mac Pro, Toast will use almost all 4 cores given no competition. But so far I'm not convinced it is encoding EyeTV recordings for DVD images much faster than it does on teh Quad - yes 7.1 UB. I need to go back and exact time some encodes on the Mac Pro then compare that here on the Quad to tell.

Just tried to launch a second copy of EyeTV and it's a no go. Maybe if I have another liscense with another tuner like the new hybrid it will work with a second copy - don't know yet. Probably getting an EyeTV hybrid tuner ( soon so I can record two HD shows at once.

A Multi-Instance and Multi-Core Usage Guide would be a great help. Does someone with authorization want to start a thread on this subject? I am not authorized to create new threads. But I would be happy to contribute to it. If someone with new thread creation permission does it, please post a link to it here. Thank you.

The funny part is, no matter what Apple does to make this work, whether its really usable, or totally locked-in-worthless, it doesn't matter.

Streaming will never be as good as audio stored on your device. Not. Ever.

Not on 3G, not on 4G, and not even over WiFi. The software and streaming protocols are way too slow to offer even comparable performance.

    I'll stick with syncing/file storage.

Maybe the reason for not having a traditional keypad is that this is actually the iPhone Shuffle.

Apple's market research team has concluded that people get tired of talking to the same people all time. And since the iPod Shuffle is such a hit playing songs randomly,
the new iPhone Shuffle will randomly dial numbers, so every call you make is never boring.

Got more than 240 numbers in your adressbook? No problem. Let iTunes autofill your iPhone shuffle and get a new telephonic experience every time. Mom follows Work. Home follows Pizza Parlor. iPhone shuffle loves to improvise. Take the Shuffle switch, for instance. Even if youve synced a particular call-list, you can shuffle numbers with a flick.

My phone does that now. Little did I know it is a *feature*.

Why is everyone saying that Aperture 2.0 announcement is too little???

Photokina is all about *photo*. Aperture is about digital *photo* workflow. Its workflow features were pretty groundbreaking a year ago. Yes, it was buggy before first update. Yes, it was slow, and still is too some extent. But the features they showed -- autostacking, the loupe, the library -- are *fantastic*. They had a year to improve -- why not hold a big event to show it off!

No one would say that Adobe hosting an event to show new version of Photoshop would be to little, right? Same goes for Apple.

I'm desperately waiting for the update. If AP update (2.0, 1.5 -- whatever) improves speed on new Mac Pros, my order for a MP + AP goes right in. And $3.5K go to pay for it.

I use my 2010 27" iMac as a monitor for a PC gaming rig that utilizes the mini-display port and I must say that this will be the last iMac I own until they change this. This was one of main selling points for me since I could still use a pc and not have to suffer with the iMac's poor gaming performance.

No matter how you slice it, the integrated video card with the current iMacs CANNOT drive the resolution these displays use.

The only option is build a high end PC that can push that kinda resolution at decent framerates.

The video cards in these machines will be perfectly adequate for 95 percent of what 95 percent of their potential customers need, and that's what Apple cares about. Why eat into profit margins and complicate the product line when such a tiny segment of the market cares about something?

Now that they have removed the option and restricted it to TB only display ports, we are now forced to "upgrade" to a new mac tho it still cant hold a candle to whats available to system builders today.

I made the switch to Mac years and years ago but I think it's finally run it's course. When this thing takes a **** and they offer me a new one through my Apple Care, I'll sell it and buy a real display an perhaps mac mini.

Apple has fallen so far behind the desktop computing business and its clear they want to funnel their remaining customers through this purchase path.

They haven't fallen behind; they're just not interested in serving the market you're part of. Apple are interested in selling elegant, integrated, simple computers to ordinary people, and ordinary people play games on consoles. The universe of potential customers who care about high-end gaming on personal computers is relatively tiny, so Apple always have and always will ignore it. I'm an occasional gamer myself, so I know it's frustrating, but the simple fact is that if you use a Mac to do most of your day-to-day computer stuff, you're going to have to have a Plan B to do any high-end gaming. The market isn't big enough to make Apple care otherwise.

It's the reason they publish notice of checkpoints -- you're considered to have consented to being stopped if you drive through a checkpoint after notice has been published.

It's why I'm shocked Congress is targeting an app that gives that notice. They're attacking the very leg of Constitutional support these checkpoints stand on.

Office and Windows are/were generic words OUTSIDE of the computer industry (like Apple). But app(lication) store is a generic word INSIDE of the computer industry and that the big legal difference here.

Like I just said.... Mac's had windows (and they called them that) before PC's had "Windows". Mac OS has used windows and trash and all that drag-and-drop and double-click-a-file goodness long before any DOS PC had it. Xerox invented it, sold it to Apple, and Apple used it in the Mac.

"Windows" was a generic term in the computer industry before Microsoft had any trademark.

EDIT: I still think neither should be allowed, but given the precedents out there I would give Apple the "App Store" trademark. Certainly MS is the pot calling the kettle black here. Considering their windows-based operating system is called "Windows" and their Office productivity suite is called "Office". These guys should all have to come up with better names for their stuff if they want a trademark. Like.... why not just stick an "i" in front of it? iApp Store (see how easy that was).

What seriously kills me about all this is that those sensationalist chimpanzees from GP rally against a computer company that presently has roughly 6% (or less) of the computer market....almost every throw away computer I've ever seen were Compaqs, HP's, Dells, Gateways/e-Machines, and a few other generic crap boxes from some nameless plastic factory stuffing windoze in a toaster. Seriously, Greenpeace goofballs should stop stargazing up their rectums and take a look at the largest contributors of hardware refuse. Macs as far as I know are not easily tossed out. apple computers have been primarily hand me downs unless some terrible accident happened rendering it useless. seriously, no one throws away a functioning mac, unless they decided lead paint makes for good breakfast cereal.

How many of these sap-chugging numbskulls go after Dell for making computers that generally end up being sidewalk fodder? perhaps they should invest their energies into designing the green computer, since they seem to have so much gloriously skilled scientists at their disposal to expose the evil apple. why is this concept so hard to grasp?

you are a different kind of user. 3 running copies at once?? you rely way too much on physical obviously this won't be for you.
Ummm, what is so hard to grasp about using stuff when NOT AT HOME???? Why is being at home the focal point for you? Why do you assume that people and myself are only going to listen to music when at home? People do it away from home too. Also, I do use WiFi at home. I still have all my music and such stored locally. I have three running copies for one reason....HDD failure. Now, HDDs are inside the space available inside my PC tower so its like they're not even there. So you're right, this wouldn't be for me. Why should I have to pay AT&T more money just because Apple may potentially shake it all up. Nah way.

The very fact that people think they "deserve" vacation days is mind-boggling. Why should you "Deserve" to get paid a single dime you did not earn?

I work about 60% self-employed free lance, and 40% at my old "day job". Guess what. Neither one offers me "vacation days". Am I miserable? Hardly!

If I want a vacation day, I simply do not work. That also means I do not get paid. It would seem mighty pretentious of me to be expect pay for work not done.

If you want a job with more vacation days, FIND ONE! no one owes you a darn thing, certainly not pay for days off.

Microsoft doesn't sell hardware. Apple does and mobile devices make up a large part of Apple's sales and revenue. They are a tiny blip on the radar percentage wise as far as pc's are concerned, no matter how you spin the numbers. 90% >4.6%. And yes, Apple makes a tremendous amount of money on the products they sell, far more than anyone else, and I realize that most of you take a tremendous amount of personal pride in the money Apple makes. And as a consumer, I find that absolutely bizarre. But that's just me.

As a consumer, it is not irrelevant how much money a company makes when it comes to choosing a product or service to purchase. Apple being super-profitable is comforting to the extent that it means the Apple ecosystem will be sustainable for years to come.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, while I agree that the news of its death is highly exaggerated, the current state of things is worrying as far as it means the company, despite its very high market-share in PC OS, is not anymore an industry leader as in bringing out bleeding-edge innovation and inspiring the market: outside of Windows, Office and the XBox, all their initiatives are abysmal failures. That doesn't mean that Microsoft is doomed: it has a high potential and the money for bouncing back, but that will be at the cost of tough, painful decisions they have to make NOW. And meanwhile, the actual leaders, namely Apple and Google are not going to sleep.

I really can't say enough good things about my new MBP 17. If next year brings a redesign then it will need to be one hell of an improvement to get me to switch, because this thing has impressed me so much more than I expected.

Not too many details: would this stream movies already downloaded or let you download/view simultaneously (like view on demand)?

Ideally both. If you have the bandwidth then you can start watching right away. I suspect though it will not be streaming, but rather download via torrent environment to ease bandwidth on Apple...

I personally think passing around checkpoint info is protected under free speech. But, to repeat myself, anyone who is over the legal limit and uses an app to avoid a DUI is a selfish, irresponsible *******.

Though I've heard of cops pulling people over for flashing their lights at oncoming cars to warn of speed traps... I wonder if those people managed to get out of that ticket with the "Freedom of speech" (I hope they did).

As tracked in our Buyer's Guide (, the iMac has reached its average update interval, suggesting that we might be able to expect refreshed models to appear some time in the relatively near future. Expectations for revamped iMacs include a move to Sandy Bridge processors and implementation of the new Thunderbolt connectivity standard that debuted in the MacBook Pro last month.

In a series of Tweets (via (, CNET's Brian Tong claims ( to have received word from a reliable source ( that new iMacs should debut in late April or early May. The updated iMacs are said ( to feature Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt as expected, but no major cosmetic changes are reported to be included.iMac rumors have been relatively sparse in recent months, although DigiTimes indicated ( in mid-December that Apple was expected to update both the MacBook Pro and iMac in the first half of 2011 with the iMac featuring a new panel size and price points. Just days before the MacBook Pro update in late February, DigiTimes reiterated its claim ( that may change the screen size on new iMacs, claiming that the new models could debut alongside or soon after the MacBook Pros.

Article Link: Potential iMac Update to Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt in 4-6 Weeks? (

More surprising than this rumor is the fact that it's the first actual MAC rumor (beyond "we've found that the Early 2011 MacBook Pros have quirks" posts) in weeks. None of that is surprising though. I wonder if there will be any surprises with this refresh? I'm guessing no Blu-Ray, which means I'm not buying one. Though I'm still curious as to what'll be under the hood.

Whether IMac takes Merom or Conroe, it's still 64 bit. Does anybody have any feeling whether the IMac will be able to handle > 2GB of memory (assuming 2GB dimms are for sale)? That would make me very happy :)

As far as I know it can handle 2GB+ memory now up to 4GB on the 945G.

The 945G supports 64-bit, so you can drop in a Merom. So current intel iMacs will do 4GB and 64bit.

If Apple drops in Merom in the next few months without moving to a new chipset. I am guessing the amount of memory will still be limited by the chipset, at 4GB.

If Apple goes Merom with a new chipset, or Conroe that will change the ball game.

So. The last factor is of course cost. 2GB sticks are way too much to be cost effective. I would hope to see the cost come down, once the need for 4GB of memory in a mobile becomes necessary. I don't think it is right now.

I agree - a thing called capitalization - they have to develop an iPhone and it would be very stupid not to follow the iPod concept. That's why it takes so long I think...

But - there is nothing in this "news" that's close to "revealed"...

arn very rarely posts info from his own sources. When he does, that info is always correct. I'd bet a good deal of my savings that the iphone will look very similar to that pic.

I am not worried at all. Yes the next event will be all about the Movie store and next gen iPod.

Samsung is starting to be less and less innovative, they really are setting down at the drawing board , scratching their heads trying to come up with a design and then....." bing!!! their iphone mail alert just popped off and there is their next cell design!!

Apple is starting to be less and less inovative. The iPhone UI hardly changes for the last 4 years. But hey, lets sue everybody.

Don't get me wrong, I would welcome a new enclosure but I think that allowing the prospect of one to be the determining factor in the purchase of a machine is ridiculous. As much as I would LOVE to have a gunmetal colored mbp, if it came out tomorrow I wouldn't be upset that I have a silver one because I truly do love my machine. Apple will always continue to innovate and release new products, and IMO now that they're using intel chips the rate of obsolescence will increase (in terms of harware and performance more than appearance).

More than likely a new case would mean a snazzy magnetic latch, a user replaceable HDD, and possibly an end to the MBP heat issue. When a 120 gb ipod comes out, is that the HDD you want in your computer? Besides, this is Apple we're talking about--do you really think any design change is going to be a demotion? Has any Apple redesign sucked? Ever?

When my mom was a cool, happening chick in the early '70s and added avocado green appliances to replace those big, white 50's-era appliances she looked around her new kitchen and thought to herself "Wow. Gorgeous! How much better can it get?"

Cingular (GSM) is $1.29/min in Europe. (About .68 pounds in the UK)
Verizon (CDMA) has dual CDMA/GSM phones that are $1.49 in Europe. (about .79 pounds.)
Sprint (CDMA) also has some dual CDMA/GSM phones that are also $1.49 a minut in Europe.

Although the best deal is with T-Mobile (GSM)> $.99 in Europe. (Or .52 pounds)

There is nothing unusual with this move, I dont know why it keeps coming up. In fact, its strategic on Creative's part to include it in the settlement. They make good headphones and speakers, and if affixing a 'Made for iPod' tag on them increases revenue, they have nothing to lose. Total profit

What baffles me more is that there are so many people who actually take sides with the criminals here. Granted, robbing an Apple Store is not the most heinous of crimes, but seriously, this is what can happen when you decide to break the law.
I wonder if certain people assume that we should all just go train with Morpheus and Neo, so the poor armed criminals could be disarmed with the least possible physical damage to their bodies.

Care to actually show me what app that will actually do what I was talking about?
I want to play music from iTunes on my Mac as the source, and multiple airplay devices as the target. Currently I can only play to Airport Expresses and Apple TVs (and upcoming Airplay certified speakers). I want Apple to include all iOS devices to that list of target devices.

Check out the Airframe and Airview apps in the App Store. They do what you want but unlike the Apple TV and Airport Express, you have to have the app open for the device to be recognized as an Airplay target device. Airview is free and Airframe costs a couple of bucks but it supports tv out which Airview does not. Neither support DRM content though.

But instead of using those apps, Apple already provides a solution in iOS 4.3 with iOS Home Sharing. It makes more sense in my opinion that way anyway. If you want to listen to music on computer with your mobile device it's usually because you have it in your hands which means a "pull" type solution like Home Sharing would be beneficial. A "push" type solution doesn't really make much sense unless you have your mobile device connected to a TV or some speakers. But then that's what the Apple TV and Airport Express are for.

If this "mall cop" also happens to be an off-duty police officer moonlighting at a second job, I'm not surprised at the outcome. Police officers are rightfully taught to shoot to kill. A wounded criminal can still kill an officer wheras a dead one cannot. Unfortunate outcome, but the simple truth is don't commit armed robbery.

This article points out that Microsoft has a hard time with large numbers of pirated copies of Windows being used out there. (*gets up and starts clapping...*)

Keep listening to corporate run media which lies and doesn't tell the whole story.. my friend, unemployment and the economy aren't getting any better.. in fact, very soon it will collapse.. as inflation starts to settle in.. and if you wanna know the truth, look at BBC and other non-corporate run media for the truth. I know in my home state its like 7.9 percent and most of the jobs are health care and IT - no industrial, no customer service, nothing else.

    Apr 14, 04:24 PM
No. You are confusing these with facts. I've pointed out to you each time you have made something up in my reply.LOL, and yet you still haven't given any examples.

Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only True. In the same way FW is 'Mac only'. You perhaps don't understand the difference between speaking literally and effectively. Effectively, FW is considered 'Mac only' yet is available to any vendor that wants to implement it. But the lack of interest has resulted in it being considered 'Mac only'. Not literally, but effectively. See the difference?
Right, and no where was this specified at this point in the conversation. You are simply fitting it in for your argument. FireWire was not mentioned in the original post.

    You: Bingo True.
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only False. You posted an article that said others could use it. Nowhere in your article did it say others would use it. I explained this to you, but again, you missed the point. Firewire isn't literally Mac only either. I knew what article I posted and I knew what it contained and it served its purpose perfectly fine. I don't need to show you who's going to use it because it's going to be native in Ivy Bridge ALONGSIDE USB 3 as the title would suggest. There's no reason NOT to use it as the superior IO and it's already there. This isn't rocket science.

You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass False. I don't think you understand what a metaphor is, because you aren't using it right. I claimed, and the OP later explained, it was meant, in context, effectively Mac only. Seriously, this is highschool english. Wow, what a surprise. The OP decided to choose the route that served him better for the discussion.

Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be trueFalse. Econogeek did well in explaining how the situations differ. You explained nothing.I explained why ThunderBolt wouldn't be another FireWire. You weren't having it and decided to pull strawman attacks.

You: Go on a rampage of insults False. No insults. Just observations. If you made a lot of spelling errors and I pointed them out, that would be an observation, not an insult. You both misunderstood posts and made up claims of statements that did not exist. I pointed that out. If you felt insulted, you are being overly sensitive.Pointing out spelling errors and telling someone that they belong on the short bus are two different things. Sounds like you have some self-esteem issues if you feel the need to tell someone they're mentally retarded over an IO discussion.
