A shame about scrapping the idea of a ground up design - I hope that doesn't lead to a lack of innovation. That's what really leads Apple along! Although if they just make a killer phone (I'm sure they will at some point...) it's bound to sell buckets loads!

    Uber

This doesn't mean they will just re-brand a phone...it might just mean they are buying transmitters/etc. from other sources rather than engineering their own. Depending on what they buying "off the shelf," this only makes sense...why re-create the wheel?

Of course they may end up just re-branding a phone, but that doesn't really seem like the Apple thing to do.

I thought the Yonah was Socket 775. It's not? :confused:No, Yonah is a variant of Socket 479. The Pentium-M used it too. Yonah has the same number of pins but there placement is slightly different.

If I bought one of these, could I put it in my Intel iMac and have it work? No, the Sockets aren't compatible.

Bono, whilst playing a gig in Glasgow, got the whole crowd to be silent and then began slowly clapping his hands. He got the crowd to clap along for a while, the stadium quiet except for the rhythmic clapping...

After a short period Bono spoke, saying that everytime he clapped his hands a child in Africa died...

Suddenly, from the front row of the venue a voice broke out in thick Scottish brogue, ending the silence as it echoed across the crowd, the voice cried out to Bono "Well stop ****ing doing it then!!"

    True story.

Red glossy 1G nano - blergh, red anodised 2G nano - could be cool.

You could just use teleport http://www.abyssoft.com/software/teleport/

Teleport isn't the same. Teleport is a way to CONTROL a second computer, I'm referring to a way to specifically use extra direct-connect monitors.

Not to mention... Why would you want to use the new iMac as a display on an older computer? By the time this iMac is obsolete and ready for re-use as a display, you'll have a newer/faster/better computer to connect it to.

I'm very happy about the gapless playback, and battery life, but generally all these updates are pretty disappointing.

Pretty much sums up my mood hours afterwards. At the time, I was flaming pissed/disappointed. I'm pretty much utterly disappointed by this event.

But this iPod was almost "expected," from a business standpoint. Full screen iPod and iPhone; anything short of a 60/120GB iPod lineup and I'll see it as a huge letdown.

    Steve's pre-Holiday event's bar is set at infinity +1.

    I blame the no-show turtleneck sweater. :D

I never said the streaming isn't possible. I just said there isn't a HARDWARE device like the airport that makes this possible without a computer.

Having to leave a computer hooked up to the TV all the time (or drag over a laptop) isn't a convenient solution. An airport box with video output IS a new solution, and something not available now.

NOW you're on to something.Let's expand on that ;)

Where is the video out from the airport going to go ? The TV of course!

    Now..

Why not just make a Mini type box with 802.11n with DVI/HDMI/S-Video and Digital/Analog out ports.Connect that to the tv then stream from your computer or the movie store. While we're at it toss a hefty HD in the mini for recording.

It's much more convenient too.Just sit on the couch and surf Front Row for movies then buy it and send it to the tv.POW! one step..

Apple IS about ease of use..

Quite a few people seem like they upgraded their MBP from 2010 MBP to 2011 mbp, Maybe just to have the latest product. Its possible that the imac will be released in 4-6 week time period and still no use for TB port...and finally when hard drives are released everyone will be outraged at the premium they will have to pay.

Apple's walled garden policy doesn't bring security to end user or has failed at that. Just take a look at Storm8 apps (dev is sued / spy ware). However, it allows Apple to full fill its destiny of being the big brother like in their 1984 spot... wait, wasn't it meant to be the other way around... hell, just tell me who will be the girl with that sledge hammer cause I'm sure it ain't Apple...

    How about this:

When you are born, you are given, in effect a serial number. which is yours as a human being for life.

When you buy any digital media, this is linked to our number for life.

This means for as long as you live, and whatever device you buy, you can access this media always.

So I buy and iPad and I pay for the "RIGHTS" to watch/own a movie.

I have paid my money and now that movie is mine to watch any time in the future on whatever device I buy in the future.

    Wow... I want what you're drinking! :p

BTW... sort of what you described, minus the tattoo on your forehead, is called an iTunes account with a cloud service.

So Apple's method could be more efficient their side, offering a spotify type model where everyone accesses the same iTunes purchased track (except this time they own it) instead of Amazon's where each indivdual track is stored in their "digital locker"?

A nice bt of foresight by Apple if so.

It's not really an original idea. Lala was doing this last year, until Apple bought them and shut them down.

there is no such thing as charity in america, it always comes through commerce. why not just donate the $200 bux? does a lot more than the 10 bux you are donating now, so you can justify getting a new ipod. hell i would buy a red ipod just cos of the color, if they're gonna do this they might as well just donate 10% of all ipod sales. at least it does something.

"Hi i'm bono, there's a huge aids problem in africa and people don't pay attention, heres a new ipod"

    wtf.

Wow, that's a big statement. You're right, of course.

It's kinda like if there was a healthier Big Mac. Healthier because it comes with a whole grain bun.

Of course they're complementary. USB for the mouses, joysticks, and dancing desk toys. Thunderbolt for real I/O like hard drives and RAID. Same as how it's always been, only now we'll have Thunderbolt slowly replacing Firewire.

All my external devices are Firewire today: multiple hard drives, DVD burner, video camera, flat bed scanner, card reader, and audio mixer. The only USB devices I have is my mouse. I suppose I'll slowly migrate to Thunderbolt as I upgrade, but Intel's new USB announcement won't change any of this. Maybe my mouse will work faster? lol.

I was asking you what I thought would be an easy question for you to answer. I'll ask again, it will work with any USB device, do you think that is an incentive for drive vendors to invest in it? I'll wait.
Yeah, it is. USB 3.0 is not that big of a step up from USB 2.0 so those that really need the extra bandwidth will not bother with it and go straight to Thunderbolt. Simple as that. Leave your rinky dink Toys R Us low bandwidth peripherals to USB and leave the big boy peripherals to Thunderbolt.

And I've posted no strawman arguments. I didn't insult you either. It was an observation. Reading difficulty is a problem, sure, but it is a a challenge that many people face. I am hopeful that those with this limitation can better themselves perhaps by taking some courses. Dialog is always better with someone that understands and can follow the discussion.Sure you have, you've completely ignored my other post then changed the subject to reading comprehension to smokescreen the topic at hand. Oh and give me a break with your non-insult ********. You have been making jabs about short buses and taking comprehension classes over a Thunderbolt and USB discussion. If anything you are the one that needs to take some classes, maybe not on comprehension but I'm sure you get the idea.

To properly recap, I believe it could be a repeat of FW and it could end up being considered 'Mac only'. I know it is subtle that a claim it will be DOA (well, subtle like a baseball bat, I guess), but it shouldn't be this difficult for you to understand. You are really, truly, picking the wrong fight. I think we actually agree on a lot of points. I'd like it to succeed, but can see things that might be obstacles. You don't see those as obstacles or perhaps don't see them at all. But, really, stop arguing against things I never said.Actually let's do a real recap:
You agree with a claim that Thunderbolt will be Mac only
I respond with an article that simply states it won't be
You respond with the reason it won't take off as manufacturers will have to add it separately
Econgeek tells you it's a completely different scenario because they don't need a license through Apple
I tell you Intel will be supporting both
You then start with your strawman argument and ignore a portion of what I stated
You also follow that up with some insults
I respond with video proof of why Thunderbolt will be popular with many devices
You ignore then respond with more insults

What do people prefer? I've heard quite bad things about the Magic Mouse, the majority of people saying they find it uncomfortable etc?

As I already have a good Logitech wireless mouse, would it be a better combination to use that plus the Trackpad?

Personally I really like the Magic Mouse, but I know a lot of people do find it uncomfortable. But either way, if you've already got a good mouse then I would definitely go with the Track Pad *it makes general use (surfing the webernet and such) much more comfortable.

I understand where you are coming from. With your feet planted in set in concrete, unable to fathom future developments based on the experimental or high-end tech of the day, the Blu-Ray seems endlessly of value. Much like the tape reels of the 60s.

The BluRay is going away for one very specific reason: mechanical. By 2016 the flash memory chips for 50gb will probably be so everyday and cheap that bulky, mechanical BluRay will seem awkward. By 2019 I'd bet you can store several times more than a BluRay on medium-priced thumb-drive.

Proof? Look back 6 years when a 1gb thumb-drive was a huge chunk of cash. Look back 10 years when a 512MB thumb-drive was almost prohibitive to buy. The future is non-mechanical.

perhaps, don't take it the wrong way but when people buy machines today, they also intend to use it for all the days leading up to the point where you can get 1 TB flashdrives for a few bucks.

So much so, it is Wal-Mart who is pressuring studios to shun iTS, and to a large degree it is actually working.

    Not for long.

    Sadly,
Wal-Mart is God in the retail sector. They have far more power over the success of CDs and DVDs than Apple could dream of. I doubt that is going to change anytime soon, especially not as a result of Apple movie sales.

Checked Checked and triple Checked 35.9meg video compared to the original 16.8meg for the video before. They just take a while to load into the iPods memory. H264 and great quality.
