Not cool. Coming from an iPhone 3GS, I seriously don't want to wait.

I'm still on the 3G! I really can't wait for the new iPhone! My contract is up in July.

Hm. Hey guys... I'm a longtime reader of MR. I always read your comments and never recall posting (Creepy, eh?)

Anyway apparently I once made an account although I don't remember.

None the less... I'm surprised at how much doubt there is about Core 2 Duos. Apple and Intel are more or less best buddies. You honestly expect Apple to not update their lineup? You don't think people will go... Hmm... Core Duo Macbook Pro... Or... Core 2 Duo Dell. Even a moron will say "2's better than 1!" Apple is KNOWN for having top of the line systems in their respective class, and now that that class is Intel processors, I have 0 doubt that Apple will introduce Core 2 Duos in it's Macbook Pros as soon as it can. The reason I say Macbook Pros is because I'm sure that Macbooks and Mac Minis will say with the Core Duos. Why? Apple needs to better differentiate their pro line from their consumer line, because right now there is not much difference between the Macbook and Macbook Pro, performance-wise (Yes I know Integrated Video, Glossy Screen, etc.) but Proc. to Proc., Almost no difference.

As for "Meroms in iMacs..." Maybe, but I doubt it. Not SOON at least. Conroes then? You guys are forgetting... Apple doesn't NEED to use it. Just because it's AVAILABLE means almost nothing. Why would they use Conroe when they simply don't need to. I don't think we'll see Conroes at all in Macs quite honestly, and I don't see any problem with that. Maybe in Intel-based Power Macs, but there's ALOT of speculation about that.Nope. The entire line will be Core 2 Duo by Thanksgiving. MBP will get speed bump to 2.33GHz for further differentiation while MB will remain 2GHz. No logic to keep buying Core Duo processors for the same money as Core 2 or less than they bought Yonah to begin with. They are already making record profits. I doubt they will deliberately cripple mini, iMac and MB when everything is selling like hot cakes anyway. There are plenty of other ways each line differentiates from the other. To leave any line in Core Duo would be outright greedy and I dont' see Apple as having that personality trait.

I fugure it's a 50-50 chance Steve tells the developers next week they can start thinking about 64-bit optimization due to the Core 2 shift that will be complete this year.

Remember, we're almost at 6 months with the Mac Mini, and it's seen neither a chip upgrade nor a speed bump.

So it's definitely due for one. You don't really think they'll go a year before it's upgraded, do you?

    so help me out here..

BTO = anything purchased online? (even if the config doesnt change at all on a MBP) vs. me walking into a store and getting one today?

what im getting at is i would like a Merom MBP but if i want to take advantage of the iPod edu deal i have to buy today, the 16th.

so then if i get the current MBP id have to keep it unopened until the announment on the 24th? then take it back to the store?

if ship dates go into October, when will the stores have em in stock?

does that make any sense :D

Good thing since smartphones are fast enough already and the environmental impact of short cycles for electronics is immense.

Though competition is a desired aspect in any market, from a buyers standpoint, there is still that demand variable.

I believe that even if Apple takes total market consumption, because it seems to be going that way, the price will dictate how sturdy the dominance will be. So long as they keep the prices affordable, they will have no problems.

Same applies with with their Macs. If they were to lower the prices, the profit margin would take a big hit but a slow market saturation would occur.

We need innovation and great experiences, but price moves that demand curve.

Only for those with a lack of understanding of basic math. Again, the problem is not the equation per say, it's the people that don't understand mathematics.

Nobody uses / when writing down by hand (they do when programming on a computer- fine), or at least they shouldn't. It doesn't matter if / has a strict definition if it is not strictly enforced. I did a chemistry degree, and that obviously involves maths. Yet, if someone had emailed by an equation like this I would have asked for clarification, because I know they are thinking in terms of two lines (using ______).

I'd say it is an assumption to presume that / literally means / in this case. The most likely scenario is it is only being used because this is a forum, in writing (or in proper software like LaTex) it would be written on two lines. The most logical answer is 288; however, I can't say what the original author intended.

Hum, no it's not. Where did you this "clarity" from ? / is the division sign. Even if it is a fraction sign, 48/2 is the obvious fraction. Anything else requires assumptions and interpretations which have no room in mathematics.

It's a joke. The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is 42. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Note the username is Don't Panic.

What do you get if you times 6 by 9?

So, lets see if I understand?

Apple is doing everything they can to move things to the cloud while AT&T and Verizon are ratcheting down how much you can use their network to access what you put in the cloud...

Agree KJR. And I smell a rate hike. Look, you buy a hi-def TV and KommieKast and its ilk, charge you a fortune to watch network (read sponsored) hi-def shows. The cloud is just another way to fire up a profit center.

AND EMP hates the cloud. When the illegals join forces with the zombies and nuke us, hey presto, no cloud.

Streaming aside, I like how my kindle books sync to ALL of my devices from Amazon's cloud. Obviously DRM is annoying, but this seems to be a cool direction to go in for other media as well. Add streaming for music (maybe video) and it is perfect. You can download or stream anything you own. Have Apple implement the end user GUI app and we're set. You are all right to point out the impending data transfer price hell coming from our wireless carriers.

Theyre not making any assumptions. You are.

The results of this poll are sad.

    What is my assumption?

They are assuming that all the engineers know the right answer, and that math is a language that is the same all over the world.

Cry then if it makes you sad.

Agreed. I moved from my good ol' 3Gs to a ZTE-Blade a few months ago and have to say that despite the general black/grey colors that android apps seem to be forced to use with the UI, the 'desktop' of the phone is much more elegant and usable than the iPhone's. I'd really like to see Apple open up the API's a little more and maybe even allow us to completely swap out their homescreen for custom app based ones. It works well on the droids.
And then we'd lose much more battery life . Don't see why people want more control over pointless things and want more complexity/layers. That's why iOS currently works efficiently as it is. It'll likely won't ever happen because it's the Apple way.

I'm sure we'll see iOS5 push things way beyond customisable homescreens. Better notification, fresh UI and some new touch-based features will keep the iPhone ahead of the rest IMO.

Jobs reportedly responded, turning the tables...

    LOL!

Yep, them tables sure were turned because the CEO is in the trenches blessing every line of iOS code that goes into every product. Steve knows best. Rumor dispelled. Next item.

Seriously... the audacity of Apple in this day and age is mind-boggling. Everything they do lately seems to be a PR nightmare just waiting to happen.

iphone.org isn't owned by Apple, therefore, Someone who wanted to fool people and couldn't afford to pay for a .com name could have easily bought this name and just directed it to apple.com.
It is owned by Apple, and has been for years. Nobody knows why, the .org would be kind of obscure for pushing a product.

Anything can be confusing and "ambiguous" if you throw enough uninitiated at a situation. It's just that people that lack proper knowledge or training would rather say something is "ambiguous" than admit that the problem lies with them.

Always blame somebody else for problems, never yourself.

    Pretty much

You get 288 if you know what you are doing and do not make the necessary assumptions that you have to make in order to get 2

Having passed through college or any math class doesn't prove anything, even that someone is working in a particular field doesn't necessarily make it an expert in the subject.

When your job relies on solving equations and manipulating them, you can bet it does as far as understanding the fundamentals of solving equations

Math is a language we engineers, scientists, economists, etc... are fluent in.

To us this is not-ideal delivery method, but it has a definite meaning.

Looking at the thread, I think there is a clear dividing line. Native math speakers: scientists, engineers, programmers, etc... say 288. Others who are effectively non-native speakers may interpret 2 due to their lack of fluency.

    B
    I agree

If the person who wrote the equation meant 2, he would need to rewrite the expression with () encompassing the entire denominator

When dealing with equations, you can not guess what is implied. You have to use a consistent framework and follow it verbatim.

Even if we take SJ at his word (stupid idea, I know). The fact remains that Apple does store the database of all your moves on the phone and PC for eternity thus preserving the capability to access it any time they want. This is clearly a very bad idea any way you look at it.

this event is going to be simulcast in LONDON. Does this mean that movies will be able to be purchased by folks in the UK??? as far as I know you still cant purchased TV shows sold through iTunes in the UK:confused:

Strange Apple would work out US and UK movie distribution deals at the same time.

Depends on who they're marketing. If its just US movie makers, or a small subset thereof, I see no reason why they shouldn't be working out contracts to distrubte them overseas. Of course, I haven't given this too much thought (the merom MBP overshadows this in my mind) so someone else might see a problem with it

That's not really true of the SZ series either. The SZ ranges from 0.9 to 1.33" or so, and the drive area is in the thin part of it at the front

Looking closer, I can immediately see how they squeeze it into both of these computers...the trackpad isn't in the center of the laptop. How freaking messed up is that? They slid it over the to the left so that the optical drive could fit. That would bug the heck out of me.

I've never heard of this company -- are they reputable, does anyone know? I've heard all sorts of stories abut these types of things being spyware or some such, don't want to pollute my Mac with any of that garbage!

    Just a quick message.
I am not connected with Sophos in any way. Really.:) .....

It may be that many people outside of the UK have not heard of them.
'Largeist' firm, and well established. Lots of integrity and their Tech bullitins/blogs are quite helpful.

I've used Sophos from the 90's. It was one of the first to give a free monthly trial that worked on NT3.5.
I noticed that it's location was near me in the UK.

For me, it is particularly useful for network administrators as the deployment is graphically useful and easy. Their tech support is quick to answer by phone.

Even now as a mainly home user with 3 PC computers, Ive had 15 good experiences of incidences of asking questions/emails and dealing with samples.

I've even questioned twice in 7 years with them whether a 'true' a/v package is worthwhile on a Mac.

Don't take my word for it.
    Check the last 20 years...
    Interesting..

    Especially some comparisons with Norton...

Oh and before you ask yes I have two. I retired the G4 to the misses... :D I know, I am evil. :p

Same here except that I am not feeling quite so evil since the only other computers available to her are an old Dell P3 Latitude and an even more ancient P2 Sony Vaio running Windows 98. A G4 PowerBook Ti with a 60GB hard drive is going to be quite a step up for her and I just hope that it continues to last for many more years, although the fans have been making an odd noise for about 6-months now that worries me.

Anyway, I'm hoping that this rumour is correct, as usual. The Page 2 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060907103621.shtml) rumour that we aren't going to see this update until next year (presumably to coincide with the Santa Rosa chipset release) was really depressing. I don't have much in the way of a wish-list for the new machines (everything upgraded would be great) but just want to make sure that I order something that won't be replaced with something better in the next month, much like my PowerBook that was superceded about 2-months later with Aluminium PowerBooks that kicked its ass.
